As you likely know, a great deal of energy is required to heat swimming pool water. That being said, the operating costs of a pool may be greatly reduced through simple changes to your pool maintenance routine. Below are tips on how you can drastically reduce the cost of heating your pool.
USING A POOL COVER:
Evaporation is the largest source of energy loss for pools. The most effective way to reduce heat loss from your swimming pool is using a pool cover. You can easily prevent evaporation by using a pool cover whenever the pool is not in use. This will minimize evaporation and reduce costs by as much as 50 to 70 percent.
WHEN THE POOLS NOT IN USE, LOWER THE TEMPERATURE:
Always run the pool heater according to how often you use the pool. When it’s not in use, turn the temperature down. Depending on how often you use the pool, it may be more efficient to only run the heater when needed.
MAINTAIN YOUR POOL EFFICIENTLY:
You need to make sure your pool is properly maintained so that water can flow freely and efficiently. Only backwash the pool filter when absolutely necessary as doing it often wastes both water and energy. Circulate water through the filter once each day.
OTHER TIPS:
- Keep the water temperature in the correct range for what it’s being used for; 78-80 degrees for swimming & 82-84 degrees for recreational use.
- Use LED or solar powered lighting systems, as they are the most energy efficient.
- Fencing, hedges, landscaping, and cabanas that shelter your pool from prevailing winds will further reduce heat loss.
- If your pool heater is more than five years old, chances are a new high efficiency gas heater could quickly pay for itself in utility bill savings.
- When leaving for vacation for more than a week, turn off the pool heater or heat pump, including the pilot light. Please use caution in freezing conditions.
- Install a timer or a control system to automate the hours of operation.
